How Wriggle app uses Netmera Push Notifications
“What are Netmera Push Notifications and how can I use them?” This blog post answers this question and helps you take a first step into the Netmera panel to discover all its capabilities and features.
Wait a minute…what is Netmera?, you ask. Ok well, let me take a step back and start over.
Netmera is a mobile application engagement platform which can be integrated into mobile apps via a simple SDK and enables app owners to easily build and manage effective marketing campaigns to increase their mobile users engagement and retention. According to the goal of your marketing campaign, and the specific message you want to deliver to your app users, there are different types of campaigns that you can build via Netmera. Push Notifications are one of them.
Push Notifications are informative messages delivered to mobile app users even if they are not actively browsing the app. Push messages can display text, a logo, an image and an emoji. The aim of such messages is to grab users’ attention on relevant updates, offers and activities going on through the app, the ultimate goal being the growth of the app users’ engagement and retention. The key to effective Push Notifications is providing useful content to specific users’ segments which might be interested in receiving it. You can use Push notifications to inform customers about new products available within the app or general news about your service, to deliver targeted information to a customer who just purchased an item and might be interested in buying something else, to encourage users to open the app, discover discounts, take specific actions within the app in order to be rewarded…the list is really long 😉
This paragraph will provide you a closer look at Netmera panel. Specifically, it will show you how to create a Push Notification campaign through Netmera platform. And what’s the best way to show this process? Well, it’s simple…with images. Follow us in a visual journey!
The starting point of our journey is the MyApps section of Netmera panel:
In this section, you can easily spot the Create New Campaign button:
By clicking on this button, you will be directed to the following page, where you will be able to start building your campaign by assigning it a name and a type. For the purpose of this blog post, I will select the option Push campaign.
As you can see, this page allows you to specify a name for your campaign and to select the platforms (iOS, Android, Windows) you want to target with a specific campaign.
It’s now time to create the actual message of my Push Notification campaign! Let’s Save and Continue.
The next screenshot shows the section of Netmera panel which allows us to write down our Push Notification exactly the way we want it to be received from our app users.
Through a What You See is What You Push Editor, Netmera gives you the chance to have a complete visual control on your messages and to engage your app users in a more effective way.
Write a short catchy message, make sure you include the most important piece of information or the call to action you aim to deliver and consider enriching your message with a nice EMOJI, to make it even more powerful 🙂
When it comes to mobile engagement, one of the most important factors to success is personalization. Mobile data show that personalization significantly increases conversion rates. So make sure to personalize your messages as much as you can, for example by including the name, the gender, the occupation or other user attributes in the text of your message. You can select the attributes you want to add to the text of your message by clicking on the drop down menu close to the box
Build a relationship with your customers, let them know that the message is truly meant for them, make it personal 🙂 The above image shows how easily you can do that by using Netmera panel.
Sometimes a simple text message is just not enough! With Netmera you can easily add more power to your marketing campaigns by including images, maps and videos into your messages. In other words, you can convert your Regular Push Notification into a more effective Rich Push Notification. How can you do that? It’s very simple, let’s have a look in detail.
Once the text of your Push Notification is ready, you have to decide which action is going to be triggered by the Push Click, basically what your users are going to see when they click on the notification.
As you can see in the above screenshot, you can chose among a few alternatives: Open App, Show Web Page, Go To Deeplink and Show Landing Page. For the purpose of this paragraph we will focus on the option Show Landing Page first, because it’s the one that allows you to create a Rich Push Notification.
By clicking on Show Landing Page, you have the chance to select a template and decide the layout of your page. You can now easily add images/videos, a descriptive text and a button text to your message:
“What does all of this entail for the final outcome of the Push Notification?”, you might ask. Basically the sequence could be the following: your users will receive a push message, they will click on it and will be directed to the second layer of the notification, which includes the image/video you selected plus some descriptive text and a button. Finally, by pressing the button they will land on a Web Page or on a Deeplink (a specific page within the app). The action associated with the button will be determined by your choice, as you can see in the following picture:
While creating a Rich Push Notification, you can also choose to tag the users who click on the button or watch the video: this way you will be able to target them in a more tailored way with future campaigns:
Finally, you can enrich your Push Notification with a sound..
..and even a Vibration (for Android devices).
If you are targeting Android platforms, from this section of the panel you can also select a special Push Style:
All of these options will definitely give you the chance to build a very powerful Rich Push Notification, don’t you think? 😉
Before leaving this section of Netmera panel, it’s worth going back to the other Push Click Actions you can decide to associate to your message if you choose to build your notification as a regular Push and not as a Rich Push. The following screenshot shows these actions to you:
Here you can decide what it’s going to happen when your users will click on the Push: the App will be opened? or you prefer to Show a Web Page to your customers? or you want them to land on a specific page within the app (Deeplink)?
A quick note about deeplinks. As mentioned, deeplinks are links which open specific screens within the app. By selecting a deeplink you make sure your users will be directed to a specific page and will see specific content. Deeplinks are really powerful because they actually drive users within the app and push them to engage with it. Learn more about deeplinks by following this link.
Two more features available in this panel section are worth mentioning:
You can chose if you want to activate the option Show in Push Inbox. Once activated, this option makes sure that Push Notifications are shown in users phones’ Inbox, in order to remind users of unread messages and therefore deliver the message to as many customers as possible. This step is crucial for the success of your Push Notification campaign!
Before leaving this page of the panel there is just one thing left to do, and it’s deciding if I want to activate specific Conversion Analytics for my push message, in order to measure and improve the Push Notifications conversion rates.
As you can see from the image below, I opted in and selected a specific Conversion Event that I want to monitor for my Push: the Click Push event (many different events are available in the drop down menu).
Netmera also gave me the chance to select a control group: the number you can see at the bottom of the screenshot indicates the percentage of my users who will not receive my Push Notification. This step will help me make a comparison between the conversion rate driven by this Push Notification and the baseline conversion rate of my application.
It’s time now to leave this section. Let’s save and continue!
Who are we targeting with our Push Notification? Who are the recipients of our message: all our mobile app users or just some of them? As shown by the following screenshot, at this stage of the process we can answer all these questions.
If you choose to send the message to specific users and not to everybody, Netmera provides you many different criteria to help you deliver the message to the right recipients, based on their behaviours, profiles, response to previous campaigns and so on. Moreover, Netmera automatically collects data for targeting based on mobile devices, operators, app versions, frequency of app opens, time spent in app.
On the same page of Netmera panel, you can also specify if and how you want to tag your users in order to track the journey of your Push Notification. Do you want to tag the users to whom the message has been sent? or the users who open the push notification? or the ones who failed to receive the message? Here you can make your choice. Let’s save and continue!
We are almost at the end of our journey. There is one important thing left to do, that is deciding when we want our Push Notification to be sent.
Timing is vital for the effectiveness of your Push Notification campaigns. Especially when you segment your users and target them with specific campaigns, you want to make sure to deliver the right message, to the right user, at the right time. Netmera helps you manage the time delivery of your messages.
From this section of Netmera panel you can easily choose the best delivery time for your Push campaigns. Here you can decide if you want to send your message right Now, On a specific time, or On best time for each user.
If you decide to schedule the notification for a specific time in the future, you can even select the option Send based on user’s time zone (picture below), if you want to make sure the users are not going to receive the message in the middle of the night 😉
If you decide to Send on best time for each user you basically make sure to automatically optimize the delivery time for each user, according to their past behaviour (their response to previous Push Notifications).
With this function, you can choose to send all the notifications as fast as possible (Send Fast) or divide them into packages (Send in Packages)
The Send in Packages option is useful for mobile apps with big amounts of users, because it allows to fine tuning message delivery speed in order to cope with user loads.
But what happens when the notification doesn’t reach the client? From this page of Netmera panel you can set the message to remain valid and be delivered anytime in the future, or you can set an expiry date for it (in case your notification contains information only valid during a specific time slot).
If you would like to limit the number of notifications per user during a certain time slot, you can easily manage the notifications limit through the Settings section (sub-section General) of Netmera panel. Sometimes too many notifications may lead to app uninstalls, so you can set your limit in order to prevent this:
Once you set the limit though, you can still change this setting while creating a specific Push Notification, if you want the limit to be ignored for that specific message and therefore make sure it’s going to be received from all your users.
The final page of the panel displays a recap of the Push Notification campaign we just built, including all details like Campaign Name, Campaign Type, Platforms we are sending the notification to, the actual message of the notification and the number of recipients.
If you are not ready to send the message yet and you want to check what it’s going to look like on real devices, you can decide to send it to test devices first. Test devices can be easily set from the Settings section of Netmera panel.
This option gives you the chance to improve message effectiveness by creating various flavours of the message and testing them on different audiences within the same segment of users. You can select A/B testing at the beginning of your journey within the panel, when you start creating your Push Notification campaign.
Now you are ready to send your message: what are you waiting for? 😉
Wriggle is a mobile app and website marketplace helping customers discover and save money from restaurants in Bristol, Brighton and London. Their mission is to spread the word about great local alternatives to chain restaurants and cafes and promote quality food and drinks at more affordable prices, in the process supporting smaller businesses in their growth.
Wriggle uses Netmera push notifications to grab users’ attention on great deals happening around them, in the nearest restaurants and cafes. Data collected from Wriggle campaigns’ reports show there is a relevant increase in the number of direct app opens and extra app opens (app opens registered the day after the campaign) with Push Notifications. A recent campaign registered a +29.35% extra app opens versus the previous day and 152 direct app opens at the time push was sent. It’s interesting to note that these rates increased even more when the same campaign was replicated with a significantly smaller users’ segment than the one used in the first case: 112 direct app opens and 15.25% extra app opens the day after the campaign.
These data confirm how Push Notifications can be crucial to increase the engagement and retention of your app users, especially when you commit to segment your audience and personalize your messages as much as you can. Netmera panel supports you in this mission.
I hope you enjoyed the first part of our journey. Stay tuned and follow us into the next steps of this adventure within Netmera platform.
